Dr. Gu overhears their conversation and cautions against her idea. Despite her friend’s arguments highlighting her medical expertise and French language proficiency, Dr. Gu remains unconvinced. His skepticism is confirmed when Jiang fails to translate medical terms into French upon his inquiry.
However, during an update on a patient’s status, Su Wei’an flawlessly interprets the entire update into French. Impressed, Dr. Gu agrees to hire her on a one-month trial basis, with the stipulation that she doesn’t quit midway. She agrees, with the condition that her friend Jiang is also provided with accommodation, which Dr. Gu accepts.
Back in their room, her friend compliments Su Wei’an’s deep-rooted knowledge. However, they face a new problem: they are short on clothing since theirs were confiscated.
The following morning at the China Trade Corporation in Lacaya, where they reside, it’s discovered that the General’s forces are still occupying the area. A local boy approaches her, intending to retrieve all the money from her house. His circumstances are dire: he has lost his father to AIDS, and his family cannot afford medication or hospital visits. As his mother inquires about Su Wei’an, she watches the exchange and feels compelled to help. Her friend tries to dissuade her, questioning why she would help someone with no relation to her. Su Wei’an reflects on this, realizing that their destinies are intertwined.
At Friendship Hospital, Dr. Gu questions Su Wei’an about her decision to keep her university ID despite having dropped out.
However, she avoids giving him a straightforward answer. Back at their residence, Jiang discovers that Su Wei’an has taken out a substantial accidental insurance policy with her mother as the beneficiary. While looking at pictures of her mother, seemingly enjoying life, she suggests to Jiang that it might be time for her to return to China.
They prepare for bed, and Jiang remarks on how much Su Wei’an has changed over the past three years.
Later that night, Su Wei’an attempts to surreptitiously take medicine from the hospital. Dr. Gu surprises her and inquires about her actions.
In an effort to keep their conversation private, she places her hand over his mouth and peers around to check if they are being observed. Suddenly, the lights go out, and an individual inside the pharmacy locks up, unwittingly trapping them both inside the darkened pharmacy.
Dr. Gu is visibly frustrated and confronts Su Wei’an about her attempted theft. He discovers a specific AIDS medication in his bag and questions her motives. When Su Wei’an throws money as compensation, Dr. Gu is unconvinced, suspecting her of being involved in illegal drug trafficking. He attempts to leave to alert security only to realize the door has been locked from the outside. With no phone signal to call for help, he starts searching for another way out.
In a bold move, Su Wei’an threatens to implicate Dr. Gu in the theft, claiming he instructed her to steal the medication. Shocked by her accusation, he is at a loss. During the confrontation, Su Wei’an’s outburst causes a string of pearls to scatter on the floor, a cherished item from Dr. Gu’s mother. Memories of a childhood squabble over these pearls with his brother Yuncheng flood back to him. Filled with remorse, Su Wei’an admits her intentions were to aid someone desperately in need of the medication, but Dr. Gu remains skeptical.
Amidst their deadlock, she assists him in reassembling a disorganized paper, which when arranged correctly, spells out “dark rainbow” in French—a term linked to luck. Su Wei’an suggests that the person who gifted him the bracelet associated with these pearls likely intended to wish him well.
As dawn breaks the next morning, they are found asleep, with Su Wei’an resting her head on Dr. Gu’s shoulder. She gazes at him, pondering over his features. When he stirs and questions her about the stolen medication, she explains that not everyone is as fortunate as he is—some people can’t afford hospital care, while others suffer from ailments beyond medical help.
Upon the pharmacist’s unexpected arrival, she misinterprets the scene, assuming Su Wei’an and Dr. Gu are romantically involved.
After they exit the pharmacy, Dr. Gu expresses gratitude for her assistance with the cryptic letters. However, He confiscates the medications but gives her an ultimatum to bring the patient in need to the hospital within 24 hours.
Su Wei’an arrives at the location where the young boy is. The conditions are dire. His mother, driven by desperation, prioritizes money over her son’s well-being. The boy is struggling with the severe symptoms of AIDS, vomiting, and pain.
Su Wei’an, distressed by the situation, resolves to take him to the hospital. The mother is adamant about not allowing her son to leave without payment. In response, Su Wei’an reluctantly throws some money at the mother, determined to get the boy the help he needs. Unbeknownst to her, the mother notifies the general that Su Wei’an is at the hospital with the boy.
At the hospital, Su Wei’an arrives with the boy who is now unconscious. When Dr. Gu inquires about the boy’s parents, she assures him that she will cover the costs of surgery and all subsequent care. Dr. Gu is taken aback by her commitment. As she completes the paperwork, she discloses the boy’s HIV-positive status. Dr. Gu realizes then that Su Wei’an’s intention behind taking the medication was solely for the boy’s benefit. Intrigued by her actions, he contemplates the kind of person she is. Recognizing her linguistic skills and compassion, he asks her to serve as the interpreter during the boy’s operation.
In the operating room, Dr. Gu is taken aback by Su Wei’an’s extensive medical knowledge. The surgery proves to be a success, and the patient is moved to the general ward for recovery.
Fan Mingfan inquires about Su Wei’an’s connection to the young patient, to which she responds that the boy is merely a neighbor.
Overhearing this, Dr. Gu finds it curious, especially given her own financial constraints. He discreetly sends his colleague away to do rounds, seizing the opportunity to confront Su Wei’an privately.
He questions how, as someone who supposedly left university early, she possesses such detailed knowledge of complex medical conditions, specifically the adherence of a cysticercus to the basilar artery. Su Wei’an clarifies that she’s not a dropout but rather someone who holds a bachelor’s degree, albeit without completing her full course of study. She avoids explaining why she’s familiar with postgraduate-level medical concepts and instead challenges Dr. Gu about his own matters, pointedly asking why he, as an adult, would choose to wear an unusual bracelet. Her counterquestion hints at a desire for mutual respect of privacy.
The tension is abruptly cut short when the general’s men arrive, intent on abducting Su Wei’an. In a daring response,
Dr. Gu confronts them with a knife, boldly questioning their authority to remove a Chinese citizen from the hospital. His decisive action thwarts the attempted kidnapping, marking a dramatic end to the confrontation and painting him as the day’s unlikely hero.
Inside his office, Dr. Gu is questioned by a colleague about the incident where he and Su Wei’an spent the entire night locked inside the pharmacy. As Su Wei’an and Jiang listen in on the conversation, they decide to step into the office. Jiang begins to interrogate the colleague, leading to a heated exchange with Su Wei’an joining in the fray. The situation escalates until Dr. Gu intervenes, sending his nosy colleague out of the room.
Afterwards, Jiang encounters Dr. Gu’s colleague, Fang Mingfan, and casually inquires about Dr. Gu’s romantic life. Fang Mingfan, misreading Jiang’s interest as potential affection for Dr. Gu, jests that Dr. Gu is indeed taken – his ‘girlfriend’ being his dedication to neurology.
Meanwhile, Jiang contemplates whether fostering a connection between Dr. Gu and Su Wei’an might rekindle her own zest for life that she feels she has lost.
Fast forward one month at Friendship Hospital –
Sakun, the young boy under their care, is showing signs of improvement. Dr. Gu, despite facing initial resentment from Sakun, uses humor to win over the child’s affection. Unexpectedly, Sakun affectionately calls him “Dad,” which leaves Dr. Gu stunned and touched at the same time.
